Floating in Paradise:
The Ultimate Urban Lifestyle

Unparalleled Beauty, Tranquility and Livability - by Graham Marden - (503) 908-5995

Imagine owning your very own slice of urban paradise -
directly on the water - in a city that is consistently ranked by
the USA's most respected magazines and newspapers, as one of
the Top Ten most desirable cities in which to live. And now imagine that
the spectacularly beautiful Oregon Coast, directly adjacent to the Pacific
Ocean, is only 90 minutes away from you, due west - and the spiritually
compelling Cascade Mountains are only 45 minutes away from
you, due east. And now imagine that you not only live in one of
the most enviable areas, geographically speaking, in the entire
world; you not only live directly on, or nearby, the majestic
Columbia River, amid one of nature's last spectacular urban
footholds; but imagine that you are surrounded by all the necessities
of life as well - grocery stores, shopping centers, hospitals, schools,
or easily accessible via a very short car ride, train ride, or bus ride.
There is no sales tax in Portland, Oregon. There is no sales
tax on ANYTHING that you purchase in the entire State of Oregon.
And this feature alone attracts many floating home buyers to the area -
retirees and non-retirees alike. In nearly every other city in every other state
in the country, each receipt that you receive after purchasing goods or
services, contains an eight percent or higher fee for state sales tax.
Not so in Oregon. Because there is no sales tax in Oregon.
And Oregonians are very proud of the fact that voters have
rejected numerous sales tax proposals, time and time again,
throughout the years. It sure doesn't make life easier on the politicians...
but it makes life a whole lot easier on a person's budget, that's for sure.
And speaking of budgets, your floating home offers a
significant tax advantage as well. When you purchase a floating
home, you will need to have it moored (docked) somewhere. And the
space where it is moored is called a slip. And if you own the slip
space on which your floating home rests, you pay zero property taxes
on that slip space. As an illustration, let's say your floating home has an
assessed value of $200,000 and the slip space (which you also own)
has an assessed value of $75,000. Well, unlike the case with land
(on which a typical land-based home usually rests), you pay no
property taxes on your slip space. And that frees
up quite a bit of money for other things.
Getting around Portland is a breeze, and Portland's TriMet (Metro
Transit System) is one of the finest in the nation. Light rail trains
run from west to east, and from north to south, completely traversing the
entire breadth and depth of the city - as well as some of the major suburbs.
Trolleys are available in the northwest part of the city, giving it a
San Francisco-esque feel. Wheelchair-friendly buses run from very
early in the morning, to very late at night. And to make things even easier
for Portland-area residents, you can plan your entire trip online, from
Point A to Point B, utilizing TriMet's online trip planner, which quickly
coordinates time tables and schedules for Portland's
tremendous array of high-speed light rail trains and buses.
Should you want to branch out and explore the entire state - or beyond -
and do it using public transportation, you can accomplish it quite
easily, by utilizing some of the great public transportation
options listed right here.
Total freedom, unfettered mobility, and direct access to not only
scenic beauty, but incredible, life-enhancing venues - all of these
components are intricately involved in the Portland floating home lifestyle.
And it is truly unparalleled, whether you own a vehicle or not. But if you
do own a vehicle, you'll find the freeways and streets much easier to
traverse than in most major cities - even during the busiest times of the day...
Portland is a very friendly, laid-back, beautiful and warm city. There are
micro-breweries of all kinds in the Northwest section of the city. There are
bistros and cafes and coffee shops galore. Some of the most incredible
restaurants in the Pacific Northwest are located in Portland, so you'll never
have to worry about finding great dining experiences
once you move into your floating home.
And if you're a sports fanatic, Portland is home to the NBA's
Portland Trail Blazers, as well as the Portland Winterhawks of the
Western Hockey League. You can access both of these professional
sports venues via a quick train ride, bus ride or car ride. And it's also
just a quick Amtrak train ride up the interstate to see the Seattle Mariners
play, if Major League Baseball is your cup of tea. Likewise for the NFL's
Seattle Seahawks. Both teams play at the CenturyLink Stadium
in Seattle, and Amtrak literally drops you off right at the front gate...

But it is the floating home lifestyle itself, that truly stands head and
shoulders above what the city of Portland has to offer to its residents.
And the majority of people who live aboard a floating home here in
Portland, find it very difficult to choose the appropriate words when
trying to describe this incredible, hard-to-compare lifestyle.
Words like "tranquil" and "serene" and "spiritual" are quite
commonly heard. And yet, these words invariably fall far short of the mark.
Which is not that unusual - because the very best things in life truly ARE
beyond words. And yet, you are probably imagining, right now, what
living aboard a floating home is actually like. And your enthusiasm for this
intriguing idea is probably tempered with a modest amount of fear -
the fear of the unknown. Which is totally natural...
We all have a certain amount of fear of new things. But fear is
definitely the prison - and fear is something that is definitely
NOT an element of the floating home lifestyle.
Once you climb aboard your floating home and settle in, you will
inevitably start to relax...it happens every single time. Whether it's the
gentle rolling water directly underneath your feet, on the majestic
Columbia River, or the overall indelibly spiritual nature of the area...
well...it's simply THERE, whatever it is. Wildlife is abundant on the river,
and the views are indescribable. You might eventually get so relaxed, that
you'll want to start living life again - instead of merely being a spectator to it.
And in that case, you may just get the urge to jump on the interstate
and head east...and visit the most accessible and spectacular volcanic
mountain in the entire state - Mt. Hood. (It only takes about an hour to get
there from downtown Portland.) Not only are Mt. Hood and the
Mt. Hood National Forest incredibly beautiful, but they are also home
to the Timberline Lodge, which offers some of the most spectacular snow
skiing and winter sports excitement in the entire United States. There are
hiking trails, scenic mountain ranges, and a plethora of snow fields in winter,
which beckon snow-boarders, skiers, hikers and snowmobilers alike.
(If you do eventually take a trip to Mt. Hood, don't forget to visit
Mirror Lake near Government Camp. It's a once-in-a-lifetime,
viscerally breathtaking experience.)
If the snow and the mountains don't do it for you, and you want
to take a break from living on that beautiful floating home of yours,
well, there are plenty of other options here - starting with the amazing
Oregon Coast. If you've never been to the Oregon
Coast, well, that is indeed a shame.
Because it is among a handful of locales that might qualify as being the
most beautiful areas in the entire United States (if not North America).
The following Oregon coastal cities offer scenic beauty, incredible opportunities
It's always a great time to visit the Oregon Coast, but you might find
it even more enjoyable in the summer or the winter - in the summer,
the temperatures are usually in the low 70's during the day, with plenty of
sunshine; in the winter, you can catch some spectacular coastal storms,
complete with incredibly powerful, amazingly high waves - talk about great
sleeping weather! But no matter when you might visit, you will want to
come back again and again. (Be sure to bring a camera...)
When you live aboard a floating home in Portland Oregon, there
are truly no limits, and being on your little slice of floating paradise, is like
being on vacation. You can fish directly from the deck of your floating home.
Yep, that's right. Just sit on the deck (or open a window) and drop your
fishing line directly into the water. Then kick back, relax, and catch some
dinner. Speaking of dinner, you can eat, drink and be merry, right
on the deck of your home - while watching the scenery.
And you are only a stone's throw away from everything that you might
need (groceries, shopping, restaurants, hospitals, night clubs, salons, etc.) -
and only a short drive away from spectacular mountains and beaches
that the average urban dweller would kill to live near.
But the most compelling aspect of the Portland floating home lifestyle,
is the fact that these truly one-of-a-kind homes can be purchased for
prices that will fit every budget. (Floating homes range in price
from well below $100,000 to upwards of $500,000.)
